Configuring Your Headset for Counter Strike

I thought I should take a little time to show you how you can properly configure your headset for use in Counter Strike. This is really an important part of the game and gameplay. If you’re not using your headset with microphone than you’re missing out on a lot of the interactive aspects of this first person shooter and you’re not going to have as much fun as other people. I’ll show you how to get it up and running.

Plugging In

The first step is to get everything hooked up and plugged in. Depending on the type of headset you get, this could be a little different. Obviously Bluetooth technology will be hooked into the USB port, where as a regular headset will plug in the audio port. USB is easy enough to plug in, so I won’t mention that.

You’re going to have typically too many plugs for the audio/voice ports on the computer. If your computer was made in the last 8 years, than they probably have them colored properly. This means that green goes into one of the audio ports (doesn’t matter which) and pink will go into the voice. The ports should share the same color, so there shouldn’t be any confusion.

Configuring Windows

You have to go into your audio settings and take a look around. You should be able to find this by double clicking on the little audio speaker in your tray. Another way of reaching it is in your control panel. In here you should be able to find a listing for your microphone. Typically the microphone is set to a very low level or even on mute. Make sure you uncheck the mute button and increase the volume.

This will save you a lot of frustrating while in counter strike trying to figure out why your microphone isn’t working. The sound on your headset should work automatically.

Configuring Counter Strike

You’re going to have two places to work on the configuration. The first place is outside the game, in the steam application. All you have to do is click on Settings and than the voice tab. There is a test microphone button that you can push. All you have to do is tweak the volumes and see how it sounds. Once you’re satisfied, just hit okay and go into your game.

At this point you’re going to go into the game and configure things from in there. All you do is go into Options from the menu. You can select voice and test things while in the actual game. You’ll want to click on keyboard and scroll down to voice communication. It is going to be set to its default value, but you’ll want to set the key you want to use to talk.

You should be all set now. While in game, all you have to do is push (and hold down) the key that is binded for talk. Just speak while holding it and now you’re having a conversation that people can hear.
